Outdoor SPACES & TRANSFORMATIONS

OUTDOOR LIVING & LANDSCAPING WELLINGTON

TURNING UNDERUSED OUTDOOR AREAS INTO SPACES YOU'LL ACTUALLY WANT TO USE

Not every outdoor project fits neatly into a box. Sometimes it's an awkward entrance that needs rethinking, an unused corner that could work harder, or several different elements that need to come together as one cohesive space.

The Wood Whisperer specialises in custom outdoor carpentry and transformations throughout Wellington, Porirua and the wider Wellington region, combining practical problem-solving with thoughtful design to create spaces that work better, look better and feel like they belong with your home.

BUILT AROUND THE WAY YOU LIVE

Sometimes the best solution is one designed specifically for the space.

Guppy's work often starts with a problem rather than a set of plans — difficult levels, an awkward accessway, wasted space, a garden that isn't working for the family, or an idea that needs figuring out.

From integrated seating and planters to stairs, screens, pergolas and complete outdoor transformations, each project is shaped around the property, how you want to use it and what's already there.

HAVE AN IDEA - OR JUST A PROBLEM TO SOLVE?

You don't need to arrive with detailed plans or know exactly what the finished solution should look like.

Some of The Wood Whisperer's best projects start with a customer showing Guppy a space and saying, “We want to do something with this.”

He can work with you to understand what isn't working, what you want from the space and what's possible, then develop a practical solution that makes the most of the property. Rather than looking at one element in isolation, Guppy can consider how access, levels, seating, shelter, planting, timberwork and the way you actually want to use the space can work together. That might mean one carefully designed feature — or bringing several elements together into a complete outdoor transformation.

The result doesn't need to look like everybody else's backyard. It needs to make sense for your property and the way you want to live in it.

RECENT OUTDOOR TRANSFORMATION PROJECTS

FROM OLD SWIMMING POOL TO OUTDOOR LIVING - TITAHI BAY

This Titahi Bay backyard started with a particularly challenging feature — a former 1980s swimming pool that had been filled and roughly over-poured with concrete, leaving the owners with an awkward, dated space that wasn't being put to good use.

The Wood Whisperer transformed the area into a completely new outdoor living space, combining landscaping, fencing, groundwork, timber features, painting and planting to make the different levels and existing structures work together.

Custom timber detailing softens the original concrete and retaining walls, while built-in seating, steps and a dedicated firepit area turn what was once wasted space into somewhere designed to actually be used and enjoyed.

The result is a warm, relaxed backyard that feels a long way from the concrete-filled swimming pool it started as.

RESORT-STYLE OUTDOOR LIVING - KHANDALLAH

A creative repeat client who keeps finding new reasons to have The Wood Whisperer back!

This latest transformation was about turning the existing outdoor area into a space that could be enjoyed well beyond a sunny Wellington afternoon. Bamboo decking and a bamboo-lined outdoor ceiling bring warmth to the space, with integrated LED lighting and outdoor heaters making it inviting after dark and through the cooler months.

The centrepiece is a custom-built outdoor fireplace, constructed on a concrete and bamboo base and designed specifically for the space. Together with the lighting, heating and covered deck, it gives the finished area a relaxed, resort-like feel — while still fitting naturally with the home and surrounding bush.

It's become a genuine outdoor room: somewhere to cook, entertain, relax and stay warm long after the sun goes down.

Materials: Bamboo decking & bamboo ceiling
Features: Custom outdoor fireplace, integrated LED lighting, outdoor heaters, covered outdoor living

DECK BUILDING FAQs

Can you help design my outdoor space if I don't know exactly what I want?

Can you help design my deck if I don't know exactly what I want?

Absolutely. You don't need to have a finished design or even a complete idea. Tell us how you'd like to use the space, what isn't working now and any ideas you already have. We have a keen eye to suggest design ideas for your space. A lot of what we do is kind of "freestyle organic" - clients want something, but don't always know the full extent of what they are after - the layout, the flow and functionality, etc. We are more than happy to talk through ideas, share experiences, and craft the perfect experience for you. Guppy can help work through the practical options and develop a solution that suits your home and outdoor space.

PLANNING A DECK?

You don't need to have every detail figured out before getting in touch. Tell us a little about your space, what you'd like to change and what you're hoping to achieve. Photos are always helpful. SEND AN ENQUIRY
