A HOUSE DESIGNED FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY — INCLUDING THE FURRY ONES

Some of our favourite projects start with a client who has a great idea — and needs someone willing to work out how to actually build it.

This repeat client came to us with some unusual ideas — and some very real problems to solve.

Their old 1980s-style staircase and balustrade were ready for a modern update, but the redesign also needed to work better for the four-legged members of the household.

Their dog liked to jump up at the upstairs balustrade to see what was happening at the front door, scratching the railing and wall in the process. The solution? A custom viewing porthole, giving him his own perfectly positioned lookout.

The cats had another problem. Their litter tray was sitting visibly under the stairs — not particularly attractive and not great for containing the smell. We transformed the unused space into a concealed litter area, complete with its own matching cat porthole for access. On the other side of the wall, we created a hidden access door from the garage, so the owners can easily reach and clean the litter tray without opening the enclosure inside the house.

Then there was the stair gate. Rather than fitting a standard gate permanently across the space, we built a custom sliding gate that can be pushed open when needed and slides completely away into its own cavity when it isn't.

All of that was incorporated into the wider transformation from the original turned-timber balustrade to the clean, modern staircase you see today.

There were plenty of unusual details to solve along the way, which is exactly the kind of project we enjoy. The best custom work doesn't just look good. It solves the little problems that make a home work better for the people - and pets - who live there.

The dog kept jumping up on the railing to see who was at the door, scratching the railing and wall. The solution was his own port hole, so he can see who's there without needing to jump.

The next problem this client wanted to solve was the exposed kitty litter smelling and taking up space. With the unused space under the stairs, we built another matching porthole for the cat to jump into their own custom built kitty shitty. A new space was cut from inside the garage and doors installed for easy access and cleaning.

CUSTOM ACCESS RAMP FOR AN ELDERLY DOG

Not every custom build needs to be big to make a big difference.

This client's elderly dog was struggling to safely manage the stairs from the deck, so they needed a solution designed specifically around him and the existing space.

Guppy built a custom timber access ramp, sized to work alongside the existing steps and finished with a durable rubberised surface to provide plenty of grip under paw and reduce the risk of slipping.

The best part? Seeing it actually work. His owner told us he'd quickly learned to use his new ramp like a pro — and that it had made a huge difference to his safety and independence.

We're dog people too, so this was a particularly satisfying little build.

PACIFIC RIMU DETAILS

Natural timber, made to stand out.

Beautiful Pacific Rimu was used to create bespoke architectural details throughout this client's home, including feature faux ceiling beams and a custom window reveal and trim.

Against the clean white interior and black window joinery, the warmth and grain of the Rimu becomes a feature in its own right.

INTEGRATED RANGEHOOD & TIMBER SHELVING

Making the practical part of the design.

This client wanted to lose the exposed rangehood and create something that felt more considered and connected to the rest of their kitchen.

We built a custom surround to integrate and conceal the rangehood, finished with natural timber detailing and matching open timber shelves. The result is simple, warm and modern — and looks like it was always meant to be there.

Absolutely. You don't need to have a finished design or even a complete idea. Tell us how you'd like to use the space, what isn't working now and any ideas you already have.
