A great deck should feel like an extension of your home — somewhere to entertain, relax, or simply make better use of your outdoor space.
The Wood Whisperer builds new decks, extensions, repairs and upgrades across Porirua and the Wellington region, with each project designed around your home, section and how you want to use the space.
Wellington properties aren't always straightforward. Sloping sections, awkward access, existing structures and exposed sites can all influence how a deck needs to be designed and built.
Guppy takes the time to understand the space and what you're trying to achieve, then works through the practical details to create something that fits naturally with your home.
Whether you're starting from scratch, replacing an older deck or trying to make an existing outdoor area work better, we can help with:
New deck construction Deck extensions and upgrades Deck repairs and replacements
Deck stairs and access Balustrades and screening Bamboo decking
The right decking material depends on the look you want, how you use your outdoor space and the requirements of your project.
We work with a range of decking options including premium pine, hardwoods such as kwila, softwood composite decking and customer-selected materials.
The Wood Whisperer is also a Certified Bamboo Specialist, offering bamboo decking as an alternative to traditional timber.
RECENT DECK PROJECTS
MULTI-LEVEL DECK REBUILD - WHITBY
An existing multi-level deck was creating an awkward, disconnected outdoor space with several tripping hazards.
Guppy dismantled the existing deck and rebuilt the area at a single, cohesive level, creating a larger and more functional outdoor living space. Working against the side of the bank also meant significant landscaping and manually shifting soil to make the new design work.
The result is a larger, more functional outdoor living area that feels like it belongs with the house.

TWO-TONE COMPOSITE DECK - AOTEA
This new wrap-around deck was built using Futurewood composite decking with a two-tone finish.
Guppy designed the decking so the boards change direction through the different areas of the deck, eliminating the need for breaker boards and creating a cleaner, more intentional finish. A matching heat-pump cover was also built into the design so the functional elements of the space feel cohesive with the finished deck.
Material: Futurewood composite decking
Location: Aotea
BAMBOO DECK & PRIVACY SCREENING
A complete outdoor transformation combining 45-degree angle bamboo decking with wrap around stairs, custom timber privacy screening and gate. The deck was designed around the existing home and site, with wide stepped access and carefully mitred detailing creating a clean, integrated finish.
Materials: Bamboo decking + pine screening
Project: Deck, steps, privacy screening & gates
SCRIBED DECK DETAIL - JOHNSONVILLE
Rather than finishing the decking with generic straight cuts, Guppy individually scribed the boards to follow the shape of the existing stonework. It took considerably more time and effort, but created a beautifully integrated finish that works with the character of the existing landscape.
Material: Pine
Location: Johnsonville
Hand scribed finish following the existing wall
